History

The history of Usui Reiki begins with its founder, Dr. Mikao Usui. Sometimes called the Usui Sensei, Dr. Mikao Usui was born to a wealthy Buddhist family in 1865. Dr. Usui studied in a Buddist monastery. Dr. Usui always had a interest in psychology, theology and medicine. He was focused and wanted to seek a way to heal himself and others using the idea of laying hands on the body.

Dr. Usui had hiked up the mountain Mount Kurama and spent 21 days within a cave. He wanted to participate in a solo form rediscovery. He prayed, meditated, and fasted. On the 21st day he had a moment of self discovery during his meditation. This event would change his life forever. During meditation Usui saw the sanskript symbols and reiki was born.

After his spiritual awakening, he started a clinic for healing and teaching in Kyoto. The practice began to spread and Usui became known for his healing practice.

Usui founded his first clinic and school in Tokoyo in1922. Dr. Usui taught several Reiki Masters before he died to ensure that his traditions would not be forgotten.

Elements

What sets Usui Mikao’s teachings apart from other hands-on healing methods is the use of reiju or attunements to remind students of their spiritual connection.

  1. Reiki Precepts

  2. Reiki Meditations and Techniques

  3. Hands-on Healing

  4. Reiki Symbols & Mantras

  5. Reiju and Attunements

A practitioner will practice the majority of these elements alone. These elements will become a part of the student’s daily routine. A practitioner will still receive reiki from a teacher.

When brought together, each of the elements exerts a separate influence on the practitioner producing a complete system that affects powerful change.
